Psoas Muscle Release Technique

This is a sequel of the article Why Psoas Muscle Is Deadly Important.

One can find so much techniques as to Psoas release and stretching on YouTube that it’s difficult to choose a proper one.

Psoas Release Stretch

I’ve done this work for you, because more is not always good. It can be just overwhelming.

I liked this method below because it’s something very new and different from other methods you may have seen or known.

The idea is to make a proper alignment of spine by the flexion of one leg in hip and knee joint and work with another, having Psoas on one side passively being released.

The effect amplifies because of placing another leg on different levels successively.

IMPORTANT: ask somebody to help you in repositioning the leg between levels (it is not told in the video, though). The leg has to be repositioned without any active effort from your side and, therefore, Psoas activation.

Coming out of the final position must be very slow.

Why bother with that? What is described is a kind of so called positional release techniques (Google this phrase and also “fold and hold” words). In a nutshell, you put a muscle passively in a position of calm and relaxation, where all pain is gone away (usually it is a position of maximal shortening of the muscle) and hold it not less than 90 seconds. This period of time is needed for resetting your muscle for your nervous system. If done properly (and if it is relevant for a particular case), pain is gone away for long.

Now, when you have understood this principle you can apply it for any other muscles (trapezius, pectoralis minor, quadratus lumborum to name some).

So, coming back to Psoas release method from this video, to do a full “muscle reset” the leg must be repositioned passively and coming out of final position also should be slow and, if possible, also passive. Otherwise, the old program will be reactivated and all has to be done anew.

Enjoy the video.

Psoas Muscle Stretching Or Strengthening

To make this topic logically full, keep in mind, that sometimes just lengthening psoas is not exactly what your body needs.

In some cases it can be weak/inhibited and does need some strengthening. In some cases you need both lengthening. The full observation may be needed.
